Painter: Grant Wood
Location: Art Institute, Chicago.
Wood depicts a farmer and his daughter in the background of their rather simple house. The building is built in the characteristic Carpenter’s Gothic style of the artist’s time. We see the farmer clutched tightly in his fist with a pitchfork. It seems that this is not a tool for work, but a special kind of weapon. The artist conveys the complete unattractiveness of this farmer. His lips are tightly pressed together.
Description of Grant Wood’s painting "American Gothic"
Wood depicts a farmer and his daughter in the background of their rather simple house. The building is built in the characteristic Carpenter’s Gothic style of the artist’s time. We see the farmer clutched tightly in his fist with a pitchfork. It seems that this is not a tool for work, but a special kind of weapon.
The artist conveys the complete unattractiveness of this farmer. His lips are tightly pressed together. His hair is tightly pulled down, his head slightly turned. In his eyes we can read very deep resentment and genuine indignation.
We see the daughter wearing an apron, which was already old-fashioned in those days. Her face expresses determination, her lips are pressed together and there is a challenge in her eyes. She wholeheartedly supports her father.
You can see the seams on the farmer’s clothes, which fully resemble the outlines of the forks clenched in his hands. The same contours are repeated in the windows of his house.
The composition of this painting is created in the style of American photography of the 19th century (at its very end). The characters are as restrained as possible, like real puritans. It was at this time the artist becomes acquainted with the leading current of "New Substance".
So why did the painter paint this canvas? One day he saw a small, seemingly unremarkable house. But it caught the artist’s attention completely. Voodoo wanted to portray the building and fantasize a bit about who might live there.
The model for the farmer’s daughter was the artist’s sister. The people and the house were painted completely separately by the artist. The scene depicted in this painting never really existed.
The artist explained to his contemporaries that he wanted to create a collective portrait of all Americans at the time. Critics were fully convinced that the painting was an important part of the most critical portrayal of rural America at the time.
Later, the work became associated with the unwavering spirit of the country’s pioneers.

The picture has something of this: people, portrait, two, man, three, couple, woman, group, facial expression, elderly, family, popularity, famous, love, leader, person, wear, wedding, pop.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a man and a woman standing next to each other in front of a house with a large rake in the foreground of them.
