At the head of the table sits a figure distinguished by a radiant halo, drawing immediate visual focus. He is centrally positioned and his gaze appears directed downwards, towards the food laid out before him. The other figures are arranged around this central personage, their reactions varying from attentive observation to expressions of concern or bewilderment. Their clothing is rendered with considerable detail, exhibiting a range of textures and colors that contribute to the overall richness of the scene.
The architectural setting is noteworthy. A window behind the table offers a glimpse of an external landscape, suggesting a connection between the interior space and the world beyond. The upper portion of the composition reveals further windows and decorative elements, hinting at a larger structure or building. This integration of architecture provides context for the event depicted, grounding it within a specific physical location.
The lower register of the painting introduces additional symbolic elements. A basket containing objects – likely related to ritual cleansing – and a pitcher are placed near the tables edge. These items subtly allude to themes of purification and sacrifice, enriching the narrative depth of the scene. The presence of discarded footwear further contributes to this sense of significance, suggesting a moment of transition or departure.
The artist’s use of light is particularly striking. A strong source illuminates the central figure and those immediately surrounding him, creating a dramatic contrast with the shadows that fall across other areas of the composition. This selective illumination emphasizes the importance of the central personage and heightens the emotional intensity of the moment. The overall effect is one of restrained drama, inviting contemplation on themes of faith, betrayal, and sacrifice.
