RUSSIAN PROVINCE
In spring, everything is flooded with white foam
Of gardens. The streets are very narrow.
The province is undoubtedly a place of dreams,
But only after a long winter.
Its creamy roads creak,
Will you reach your destination or not?
And often it seems that the houses are poor,
And in them, you imagine a dim light.
All paths leading to the river, all roads to the river,
And the air here... in winter it crunches.
The snow crumbles, theres no need for a first-aid kit -
It can heal from anything.
Not many squares or avenues,
But in summer – dust, grass, a chicken paradise.
A dog barks, to its own detriment,
Leave me alone! you want to shout. But Im glad of the dog.
The dog barks. Thats how it should be. A gray
Fence is slightly crooked. A local historian
Lived here once, describing a whole
Forgotten world, which is better than any other.

The artist placed a cluster of buildings on an elevated hillside in the background, characterized by distinctive onion-domed structures – likely religious architecture – that punctuate the skyline. These buildings are depicted with a degree of detail that contrasts with the looser handling of color and form elsewhere in the painting, drawing the viewers eye towards them as focal points. Lush foliage flanks the hillside, adding to the sense of natural abundance.
Along the waterfront, a lively scene unfolds. Numerous figures populate the area – some engaged in loading cargo onto carts and boats, others seemingly enjoying leisure activities. The presence of watermelons and other produce suggests a market or trading hub. A small wooden structure, possibly a dockside building, is situated to the left, adding another layer to the complexity of the scene.
The color palette is dominated by warm tones – pinks, yellows, and greens – which contribute to an overall feeling of tranquility and prosperity. The sky, rendered in broad washes of pink and white, reinforces this impression. However, the hazy atmosphere and the activity along the waterfront also hint at a sense of transience and the constant flow of people and goods through this vital location.
Subtly, theres an implication of a society undergoing change – the combination of traditional architecture with modern transportation suggests a point where old ways meet new developments. The painting doesn’t merely document a place; it captures a moment in time, hinting at the dynamic interplay between nature, commerce, and culture within this river port community.
