Below this central ascension, two kneeling figures occupy the lower portion of the scene. One, on the left, is a young man with long hair and a pointed beard, holding a staff. His gaze is directed upwards towards the ascending figure, conveying reverence or witness. The other figure, positioned to his right, is a woman in dark robes, her hands clasped in prayer, also looking upward. Between them sits a stone structure upon which rests a small arrangement of flowers and foliage. An inscription on this structure reads ASSVM[PTA] EST MARIA IN CÆLIVM, further clarifying the narrative context.
The artist’s use of light is significant; it draws attention to the ascending figure, bathing her in an almost divine glow while leaving the lower figures partially shadowed. This contrast emphasizes the separation between the earthly and heavenly realms. The positioning of the two kneeling individuals suggests their role as witnesses or intercessors – they are positioned at the threshold between the mortal world and the realm of the divine. Their expressions convey a mixture of awe, piety, and perhaps longing.
The inclusion of musical angels introduces an element of joy and festivity to the ascension, transforming it from a solemn event into a triumphant one. The floral arrangement on the stone structure may symbolize purity, innocence, or resurrection – common motifs associated with religious iconography. Overall, the painting conveys a narrative of divine elevation and spiritual transcendence, exploring themes of faith, devotion, and the transition between earthly existence and eternal life.
