In the description of the painting published in the journal Niva in 1914, it is stated: The girl, in her dreams, sees herself on the seashore.
The little land baby is so cute! But how can a mermaid have such a big butt?
You cannot comment Why?
The subtexts of this painting are rich and open to interpretation. The title itself, The Land Baby, is a direct reference to the myth of The Little Mermaid, where the mermaid desires legs and a soul, interacting with a human prince. Here, the interaction is with a child, suggesting themes of innocence, curiosity, and perhaps the longing for connection across different worlds. The mermaid, embodying the allure and mystery of the sea, is juxtaposed with the land child, representing humanity and its terrestrial existence. This contrast can evoke themes of the forbidden, the unattainable, or the fundamental differences between beings. The childs nudity and open posture suggest vulnerability and a lack of prejudice, while the mermaids posture, though reclined, carries an inherent exoticism and a touch of sadness. The painting can be seen as exploring the mermaids longing for a different life, her fascination with the human world, or even a more metaphorical commentary on the boundaries between nature and civilization, myth and reality.
