This painting depicts a Bacchanal, a revelrous procession in honor of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and ecstasy. The scene is set in a forest clearing, with lush, dark foliage providing a dramatic backdrop.
What I see:
The foreground is dominated by a group of figures, some of whom are in various states of inebriation and revelry. Many are nude or lightly clad, their bodies rendered with a fleshy, robust quality. Theres a sense of boisterous movement as they carry and support each other.
