The dominant feature is the series of hills and dunes that occupy the majority of the canvas. These forms are not depicted with naturalistic detail; instead, they appear as simplified shapes layered one upon another. A palette dominated by greens – ranging from deep olive to lighter, almost yellowish hues – defines the landscape, punctuated by areas of brown and grey which suggest variations in soil composition or shadow. The trees are reduced to dark, conical forms, sparsely scattered across the slopes, adding a sense of scale but not detracting from the overall flatness of the scene.
The artist’s use of color is notable for its lack of vibrancy; the tones are subdued and melancholic. This contributes to an atmosphere of quietude and perhaps even isolation. The absence of human presence or any signs of habitation reinforces this feeling, suggesting a landscape untouched by civilization.
Subtly, theres a sense of unease generated by the flattening of perspective and the almost geometric arrangement of forms. While ostensibly depicting nature, the scene feels constructed rather than observed. This manipulation invites contemplation on the relationship between perception and representation, questioning how we interpret and convey natural environments. The limited color range and simplified shapes evoke a feeling of detachment, hinting at an emotional distance from the subject matter.
