Isaac Ilyich Levitan was a Russian painter who is not without reason called a master of the landscape. Despite his difficult life and a difficult childhood with the early loss of his mother, Levitan did not stop seeing the beautiful around him and, moreover, learned to communicate his vision of beauty to those around him by painting. The dream of the writer in his younger years was a trip to the Volga, which his beloved teacher Savrasov portrayed so hopefully.

The first trip did not impress Levitan at all, which he did not fail to inform his friend Chekhov. But the next trip introduced the artist to a small town on the Volga River called Plyos. Isaac Ilyich stayed there for three summers and painted 200 pictures, which brought him fame and renown in wide circles. Like the artist, the town of Plyos became popular, and many landscape painters began to be interested in it.
"Spring. Big Water" is a painting by Levitan, which depicts the awakening of spring. The painting was painted in 1897, three years before the artist’s death. The canvas depicts the awakening of nature from its long winter hibernation, a sign of which, first of all, is flooding. The water has flooded the coastal area, but despite this, there is no sense that it is aggressive. On the contrary: the silence and smoothness of the water fascinates. The trees displayed in the water and the light sky covered with soft spring clouds are marvelous. Subtle shades of blue, yellow and green give the picture a special color. The most varied color is blue. In the picture it is represented in all shades: from dark blue to almost white.
"Spring. The Great Water" is considered one of the most lyrical paintings by Levitan. It is very beautiful and attractive. Charming moment of nature’s awakening after a long hibernation. This moment is associated with something new in everyone’s life, which is perhaps what fascinates the artist’s fans.

Description of Isaac Levitans painting Spring. High Water.
One glance at Levitans painting is enough to understand that it depicts spring. The sun, the blue sky, the water, and a lot of light...
The snow has already melted. The lower part of the painting is filled with water. Its mirror-like surface reflects the trees. Thin birches, on which the leaves have not yet appeared, seem even thinner and more fragile than they are in reality. Among the birches, you can see an old tall pine tree and a green spruce. In the right corner, there is a piece of shoreline next to which a boat is standing.
The upper part of the painting is occupied by the sky with clouds floating across it.
The entire painting is done in warm tones. Blue and yellow are the main colors of the painting, making it brighter and softer, truly spring-like.
Levitans painting Spring – High Water helps to recall spring, joy, and happiness, evoking the warmth of those spring days.

In the foreground, on the left bank, a small, weathered boat rests on the partially dry ground, hinting at past or potential journeys. In the background, some distant houses are visible, suggesting human habitation in this otherwise wild and watery scene. The overall mood is tranquil and contemplative, capturing the transitional beauty of spring after the thaw.
The subtext of the painting can be interpreted in several ways. The flooding represents the powerful, overwhelming force of nature, a recurring theme in Russian art. It also signifies renewal and the cyclical nature of life, as spring thaw brings forth new growth after the dormancy of winter. The solitary boat might symbolize human vulnerability in the face of natures might, or it could represent a quiet retreat and introspection, a pause before the world fully awakens. The scene evokes a sense of stillness and the grand scale of natural processes, inviting the viewer to reflect on themes of change, resilience, and the interconnectedness of life and environment.
