Kuda deli nogi? Eto toljko levqaja chastj kartini.
What a beautiful painting! Of course, to make the figure more graceful, Ingres cheated a bit there: he added about two extra vertebrae to the womans back, which is why the girl has such a flexible spine. Also, where does her left leg come from? But the painting is no worse for it – the girl is beautiful. What you wont do for beauty!
(By the way, it is believed that the model was Raphaels muse and lover, Ingres favorite artist – Margherita Luti (also known as Fornarina).

The subtexts of this painting revolve around themes of exoticism, sensuality, and the male gaze. The odalisque, a common trope in Orientalist art, represents an idealized and often commodified Eastern woman, presented for the pleasure of a Western viewer. Her pose, both relaxed and alluring, invites the viewer to contemplate her beauty and her implied availability. The rich fabrics and opulent jewelry further enhance the sense of luxury and exoticism, contributing to the fantasy of the Orient. However, her direct gaze also introduces a layer of agency, as if she is aware of being observed and is perhaps even responding to it, challenging the passive objectification often associated with such depictions. The painting can be seen as a complex interplay between the artists idealized vision, the viewers desires, and the visual language of sensuality and power.
