Description of the painting "Portrait of a Boy" by Kuzma Petrov Vodkin
After the deafening fame that fell upon the artist with the painting Bathing the Red Horse, Petrov-Vodkin sought new subjects for his art. He had always been known as an excellent portrait painter, but the subject of the children’s portrait was new to him. He would return to it repeatedly, depicting children of different nationalities and ages.
The 1913 painting Portrait of a Boy shows a young man of thirteen. He is not quite a child, but he has a long way to go to reach adulthood. The author has tried to depict this contrast of ages.
The austere facial features indicate that the boy is already out of tender childhood. He is at the threshold of adolescence, where he will have to take responsibility for his actions. The simplicity and sternness of the face speaks to the boy’s awareness of his transition.
But childhood has not yet receded irretrievably. The soft and penetrating look of his brown eyes draws all the viewer’s attention exactly to them. The shade of melted chocolate adds silkiness and transparency, which makes the eyes seem deep. The depth of his eyes symbolizes the boy’s future: it will come, but one never knows what it will be.
Separately we should talk about the background. In order not to distract the viewer’s attention from the boy’s face, Petrov-Vodkin used soft and muted tones of green. This color is known for its ability to pacify. And the association with spring and green grasses emphasizes the idea that the boy is just beginning to grow up, and life for him is still full of beauty. This child is as fresh and pure as the first spring greenery and is full of energy and feelings. It’s easy to judge this by the richness of the shades.
Different strokes of the background can be perceived as an interpretation of the boy’s thoughts. They are like waves that are constantly in motion, absorbing each other.
The entire canvas is full of faith in humanity and love for the youngest members of society, who will make up its future.

The picture has something of this: people, portrait, man, son, face, boy, wear, facial expression, child, model, fashion, eye, vintage, hair.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a young boy in a blue shirt looking at the camera with a serious look on his face, with a tree in the background.
