И вот такие старцы принимают участие в управлении миром.
Raphaels works are very uneven in terms of artistic quality. His fame is well-deserved, but largely due to the Sistine Madonna. In his other works, he is a very skilled artist, but no more than that. He is completely incomparable in scale with the unparalleled Pieter Bruegel.

The man’s attire is elaborate and symbolic. He wears a crimson papal robe, richly adorned with gold tassels that cascade down from the chairs back. The fabric appears heavy and luxurious, reinforcing the impression of wealth and status. A white clerical garment peeks out from beneath the robe at his wrists, providing a contrast in texture and color. A red biretta, the traditional ceremonial cap worn by popes, sits firmly on his head.
The background is a solid, deep green, devoid of any landscape or architectural details. This stark simplicity serves to isolate the figure and direct all attention towards him. The limited palette – dominated by reds, whites, and greens – contributes to a sense of formality and solemnity.
Subtleties in the rendering suggest more than just a straightforward representation of an individual. The sitter’s hands are clasped loosely, but with a firmness that hints at underlying strength and control. The lighting is carefully managed; it highlights the planes of his face, emphasizing the lines etched by time and experience. This contributes to a sense of realism while also imbuing the portrait with a psychological depth. The overall effect is one of imposing dignity and formidable presence – a man accustomed to command and wielding considerable influence.
