To the left, a figure in a vibrant red cloak stands, seemingly addressing the seated man with a forceful gesture. To the right, another man, possibly blinded or overwhelmed, recoils with his hands outstretched, wearing a turban and flowing robes. The inscription on the platform beneath the seated figure identifies him as L. SERGIUS PAULUS, ASIÆ PROCOS:, suggesting he is Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of Asia. The inscription further states CHRISTIANAM FIDEM AMPLECTITUR and SAVLI PREdICATIONE, which translate to embraces the Christian faith and by Sauls preaching respectively.
Thesubtext of the painting depicts the biblical account from the Acts of the Apostles where the Apostle Paul (Saul) encounters Sergius Paulus, the Roman governor of Cyprus. Paul, through divine intervention, strikes a false prophet, Elymas, blind. This event leads to the proconsuls conversion to Christianity. The painting captures the dramatic moment of this conversion, with Sergius Paulus in the center, influenced by Pauls preaching and possibly the miraculous event. The reactions of the surrounding figures – awe, shock, and skepticism – reinforce the significance of the moment. The dynamic composition and dramatic lighting emphasize the spiritual and transformative nature of the event, highlighting the power of faith and the triumph of divine will over opposition.
