"Our Basement, Our Rhythm" — 5 Years of the Girl Band on UnderTheGround
Automatic translate
When we first came to UnderTheGround, it was the summer of 2020. It was scorching hot, but underground it was cool and peaceful. We were four girls with guitars, synths, and a bunch of ideas that were still just in our heads. We were greeted at the entrance by the admin — smiling, calm, with a mug of coffee in hand. He said, "If anything goes wrong, come over, I’ll help you figure it out." We nodded, thanked him… and, of course, were too embarrassed to ask when, after half an hour, we couldn’t get the bass to work. It later turned out the mute button had simply been pressed.
Five years have passed since then, and now this basement is our place of strength. We grew here as a band and as people.
2020–2021: First Chords and Nerves
We started out in complete chaos. We only had one cover, the drummer was constantly late, and the bassist kept mixing up the keys. But there was a real sense of drive. We rehearsed at the Red — it was cramped and hot, but the sound was like a wall. We recorded everything on a phone because the mixer was terrifying with all its knobs. And every night we left with smiles from ear to ear.
“If you’re not sweating, it’s not a rehearsal,” our vocalist used to say, and that was the whole point of that period.
2022–2023: A Step Toward Sound
Then we moved to Grey. It became our permanent venue. There was more space there, and the vocals were more powerful. We started writing our own songs, and for the first time, we felt like we were sounding "grown-up." When you play alongside other bands and see that everyone here lives by sound, you stop being afraid of mistakes.
In those years, UnderTheGround became a platform for us not only to rap, but also for communication, support, and inspiration. Neighboring bands helped us carry rental gear, the admins offered advice on how to record vocals, and we once ordered a pizza for the admins as a gift, and we often threw a mini-concert in one of the larger rooms for someone’s birthday.
2024–2025: Your Own Sound
We’re currently playing at the Black Room. The lighting is soft, the walls are matte, and the sound is solid. We already know exactly how to adjust the EQ so the bass doesn’t boom, and at what volume the vocals sound perfect. We’ve become what we dreamed of being: a real band where everyone knows their place and, together, we breathe as one. When the rap is good, you feel the air vibrate, and it feels like the whole basement is singing along.
"We’re not pretending here. We’re the real deal."
Over the years, UnderTheGround has become more than just a base for us. It’s a place where you can be loud, tired, and happy, where you can play until midnight and know you’ll be understood. Where no one will ask, "What are you doing here?" — because here, girls with guitars and drums have long ceased to be an exception. And every time I walk down the stairs, I inhale — and feel: here it is, our basement, our rhythm.
