More than 150 little-known works of Marc Chagall exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery Automatic translate

Since June 14, the exhibition “Marc Chagall. Sources of the artist’s creative language ”, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the maestro.

This exposition is one of the most anticipated events in the artistic life of Moscow. Creativity Chagall invariably causes great interest both in Russia and abroad. The largest retrospective exhibition of Marc Chagall in 2005 for three months was visited by almost 130 thousand people.

In a special catalog published for the exhibition, it is noted that for the first time in Russian museum practice, the works of Chagall are shown in the context of the sources of his work. The artist belongs to that generation of painters of the early twentieth century who, in an attempt to find themselves, their personal line and the form of a plastic language, turned to folk art. Chagall, who did not have a professional art education, called the natural environment - the Jewish, Russian, Belarusian, Lithuanian and French surroundings - the first and main teacher.

Real and incredible events captured by the artist are firmly connected with key household items and memorable places: from the naive hairdresser in Vitebsk to the creamery in Paris, from the cross of the Orthodox Church to the chimeras of Notre Dame de Paris.

The basis of the exposition in the Tretyakov Gallery is works from the collection of the Chagall family: unique self-portraits not shown earlier in Russia, portraits of the artist’s mother, his grandmother, wife Bella and daughter Ida. In accordance with the plan of the curators, these works are a wonderful autobiography of the artist. You can also see the little-known drawings of Chagall, made in watercolor and gouache, in Vitebsk and Paris in 1931-1956, his illustrations for the Bible and Russian fables. In total, the exposition includes more than 150 graphic works, paintings, unique sculptures and objects of decorative and applied art.
