MOSCOW. “In Search of Our Russia” - this is the name given to the retrospective exhibition of the famous artist Mikhail Nesterov, which opened in the halls of the Tretyakov Gallery, completing the exhibition project dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the painter.
As part of the anniversary project, the works of Nesterov could be seen by residents of his hometown of Ufa, visitors to the St. Petersburg Russian Museum. However, the exposition of the exhibition, which opened on Krymsky Val, has become the most ambitious of the already held shows. In the Tretyakov Gallery, connoisseurs of painting can see about three hundred works of various genres, transferred to participate in the exhibition from museum collections and private collections.
Among them are those that are little familiar to the general public. Several works have recently been handed over to the Gallery by Mikhail Nesterov’s granddaughter, Irina Schröter, and another granddaughter, Maria Titova, provided her grandfather’s work for a temporary demonstration at the exhibition.
The organizers of the exhibition decided first of all to show visitors the early works of Mikhail Nesterov, which clearly show the artist’s search for their style of writing, next to them were sketches written for historical paintings.
A little further placed the painting “Hermit”, with which the artist began to appeal to a religious theme. There are also some well-known works with images of saints, as well as the large-scale work of Mikhail Nesterov’s "In Russia".
The painting “Hermit” became the first painting acquired by the founder of the museum, Pavel Tretyakov, from Mikhail Nesterov. Thanks to its sale, the painter was able to make a trip to Europe. At the exhibition, whose work will continue until August 18, you can also see landscapes and numerous family portraits.
