The Claas family comfort and a fatal meeting

The book’s events unfold in the Flemish city of Douai. The Claes family is an ancient line of weavers and bourgeois, preserving a traditional way of life in a mansion on Rue de Paris. The head of the family, Walthasar Claes-Molina, Count of Nouro, who in his youth studied chemistry in Paris under Lavoisier, married Josephine de Temninck in 1795. The bride, from the Spanish Casa-Real family, had physical disabilities — a limp and a hunchback — but possessed a sincere tenderness and a rich inner world. The couple lived harmoniously for fifteen years, raising four children: Marguerite, Gabriel, Felicia, and Jean.

In 1809, the peace of the Claes household was disturbed by the visit of officer Adam Wierzchownia. In a late-night conversation, the Polish nobleman shared with Walthasar his hypothesis about the existence of a primordial principle of matter — the Absolute. According to him, the decomposition of nitrogen and the discovery of a single force would allow man to create metals, precious stones, and master natural phenomena. This idea captivated Walthasar. From 1810 onward, he immersed himself entirely in chemical experiments, setting up a laboratory in the attic and neglecting his family duties.

The decline of Josephine’s happiness and the ruin of the house

By 1812, Valthazar had spent hundreds of thousands of francs purchasing instruments, rare reagents, and metals. Orders from the Parisian firm Proté et Chiffreville had created enormous debts. Her husband’s constant aloofness tormented Josephine. She attempted to master chemistry from books, but was met only with Valthazar’s wrath, who expelled her from the laboratory. The family property was mortgaged, the stables were liquidated, and the staff was laid off.

Notary Pierquin, a distant relative of the family, informs Josephine of the impending collapse. Wishing to save her husband from disgrace, Madame Claes, with the help of her confessor, the Abbé de Solis, and his nephew, Emmanuel, secretly sells the painting collection to the Dutch bankers Gappe and Duncker for 85,000 ducats. The priest hides 170,000 francs of the proceeds in his cellar, keeping a reserve for his children. Josephine conceals the transaction from Valthazar, replacing the paintings on the gallery walls with other canvases.

By 1816, illness was sapping Josephine’s strength. Balthazar, busy searching for a way to decompose nitrogen, sold the centuries-old forests in Végny. On Josephine’s deathbed, the chemist, instead of offering words of consolation, shared scientific reasoning. Before her death, her mother left her eldest daughter, Marguerite, a letter containing her last will and testament: to look after her younger brothers and sister, to restrain their father’s extravagance, and to maintain a filial respect for him. Josephine died in February 1816.

Margarita’s struggle and resistance to fatal passion

After her mother’s death, nineteen-year-old Marguerite takes charge of the household. Notary Pierquin proposes marriage to the girl in order to formalize the division of property and protect the inheritance through the courts. Marguerite rejects the notary’s proposal, seeing it as a dry, calculating ploy. A deep, mutual attachment to Emmanuel de Solis, a young teacher raised in religious strictness, begins to blossom in her heart.

Valthazar briefly sinks into grief, but soon resumes his work. By 1819, he signs promissory notes for one hundred thousand francs and sells silver, porcelain, and unique tulips. The holders demand payment. Marguerite climbs to the attic and insistently asks him to stop the experiments. In response, Valthazar threatens suicide. Wanting to save her father from prison and disgrace, Marguerite takes the money hidden by her mother from Emmanuel de Solis. Her father tricks her into giving up chemistry for sixty thousand francs, promising to give up if she fails.

Another series of experiments ends in failure. Marguerite shows firmness: she secures her father’s appointment as a tax collector in Brittany with a salary of eighteen thousand francs. Balthazar resists, but under threat of the children’s departure and a complete break, he submits. In 1820, he leaves for Brittany with the old man Lemulquinier.

Restoration of the estate and new trials

Remaining the mistress, Marguerite expands her business. With Pierquin’s assistance, she attracts tenants, clears three thousand acres of land in Végny, and establishes three farms. Through thrift and the income from the farms, she completely pays off her debts within five years. Her older brother, Gabriel, graduates from the École Polytechnique and becomes an engineer. Marguerite restores the mansion in Douai.

In 1825, Valthazar returns. The family hosts a gala reception. Uncle Conincks returns the purchased paintings to the gallery. That same day, Lemulquinier, the servant, discovers an artificial diamond in a voltaic arc flask — a white, octagonal diamond, accidentally formed during his master’s absence. Valthazar gives the stone to Marguerite. Marguerite soon marries Emmanuel de Solis, and Felicia becomes the wife of the notary Pierquin.

Their happiness was short-lived. In 1828, Emmanuel and Marguerite left for Spain, where Emmanuel inherited the title of Count de Nouro. Left in Douai without the care of his eldest daughter, Balthazar again succumbed to monomania. Within three years, he completely lost his freedom of thought: he sold horses, carriages, Van Huysius’s carved panels, antique tableware, and even pawned his personal belongings.

The finale of the tragedy of the seeker of the Absolute

By 1831, the house on Paris Street has become a half-empty ruin. Balthazar and Lemulquinier are living on smoked herring and are penniless. The scholar takes out loans secured by his property, incurring the wrath of the townspeople. Locals consider him a sorcerer, and street urchins mock his ragged appearance. In September 1831, Marguerite, returning from Spain, finds the house ransacked.

Stress and insults from the city’s children cause seventy-year-old Valthazar to suffer a stroke. Paralysis deprives him of speech and movement. Margarita restores comfort to her father, lavishing him with care along with her sister and brothers. The scholar spends months confined to a chair, communicating only with his eyes.

In the autumn of 1832, the dying Valthasar overhears Emmanuel reading a newspaper article about a Polish mathematician selling the secrets of the Absolute. Hearing this, his half-dead body surges with energy. The scientist straightens up, raises his hand to the sky, and with superhuman effort, cries out a loud, "Eureka!" With this final cry of victory and despair, Valthasar Claes collapses onto his pillows and dies, taking the unsolved mystery of nature to his grave.
