In the play "Tango Square," the director stripped the actresses of their faces and hands

MOSCOW. The Meyerhold Center on its stage on July 7 and 8, as part of the theater project "The Theater", presented the audience with the premiere of the joint work of director Pavlov-Andreevich and choreographer Dina Hussein. Viewers saw the play “Tango Square” written by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, an author who has long become a classic representative of modern dramaturgy.

The play was based on the motives of the film, set according to the script of Fassbinder - according to this material the director back in 2005 proposed to stage the play in one of the capital’s theaters, but his desire came true only this year.

The play by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya staged by Pavlov-Andreevich took an extremely unusual form - with the help of a permanent co-author, artist Katya Bochavar, the heroines of the play ended up in a stage space created from two planes.

Above the sloping floor, similar to a chessboard, the plane of the ceiling hangs low, from which a blinding white light pours on the heroines of the play. There are no items that could help actresses identify the scene. Moreover, the director deprived the actresses of the opportunity to emphasize their game with a gesture, depriving their hands of the ability to move.

It is difficult to find credibility in the play, the director deliberately deprived him of his resemblance to real life. The complex text of Petrushevskaya is connected with a peculiar form of staging. Spectators only at the beginning of the performance can see the face of one of the actresses, the heads of the rest are covered with bags. Only the intonations of the voice and dance movements of the legs can help them express their emotions.

It was quite difficult for the audience who attended the premiere of the play “Tango Square” to understand its essence - the plot lines in it were only outlined, allowing us to conjecture what was happening on the stage.
