The premiere of the play "Fathers and Sons" at the theater. Mayakovsky

MOSCOW. In the repertoire of the Theater. Mayakovsky appeared the name of a new performance. The heroes of this performance are familiar to the audience based on the novel Fathers and Sons, which was read during the development of the school curriculum. However, the name of the premiere performance presented in the branch of the theater, in the hall “Scenes on Sretenka”, became different - “Fathers and Sons”.

Leonid Kheifets, the director of the play, did not use Turgenev’s novel for his new work, but a play written by the playwright from Ireland, Brian Friel, based on the Turgenev work. At first glance, it is a paradox that the basis of the performance was the translation from English staging of the famous novel. However, Leonid Kheifets believes that the Irish playwright was able to accurately identify the essence of "Fathers and Sons."

For a new performance, the stage was turned into a real veranda, typical of a village estate. Its design is not just stylized under the Turgenev era - all objects on the veranda are from there, from the nineteenth century. A brook flows near the veranda, and in it, emphasizing the running of water, pebbles and leaves. So Vladimir Arefiev, the production designer, decided to remind the audience that time is moving.

Indeed, since Bazarov became one of the popular heroes of Russian literature, 150 years have passed. However, in the performance of Sergei Belyaev, for whom the role of Bazarov became the debut in Mayakovka, his hero acquires features reminiscent of our young contemporaries.
