In Sochi, the Festival of Contemporary Scientific Cinema "FANK" Ended

On October 15, the Sochi State University hosted a closing ceremony and awarding the winners of the FUNK Contemporary Science Cinema Festival. The festival was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The festival was held from October 11 to 15 and gathered more than 3480 participants. The guests were presented bright science-fiction films that were brought from all over the world especially for screening during the festival in Sochi.

The film “The Happy Film” by the American director Hillman Curtis became the winner of the festival. The film touches on a topic that is familiar to every resident of a big city. The main character is Stefan Sagmeister, a graphic designer from New York. He lives in his beloved city and loves his work. The picture documents the search for the main character and honestly shows everything that he meets in his path: joy, a broken heart, love and death.

“FUNK is a very important festival, it promotes the rapprochement and development of a dialogue between filmmakers and scientists. The human mind and intuition in the age of computer technology are developing, not limiting themselves to any one of the areas. Therefore, such a vivid demonstration of the practical rapprochement between science and art should become an effective means of scientific communication, convey relevant thoughts to a wide audience and arouse interest in both science and artistic creativity, ”said Daria Parkhomenko, festival expert, founder and curator, about the festival Art & Science Space.

Of great interest to young students was the opening film, The Race to Extinction, documentary director Louis Psychoios. The film touched on the extinction of thousands of species of living organisms.

“Thank you very much for this movie. It is very important to understand what is happening with the planet. For myself, I decided that it was not necessary to arrange gigantic promotions. Everyone can contribute to protecting the planet - treating natural resources carefully, conserving water and energy economically is something everyone can do, ”said Alexander Petrov, a student at Sirius Educational Center, after watching the movie“ The Extinction Race ”.

In addition to film screenings, the festival included popular science lectures by famous Russian scientists, science shows for children and professional meetings of scientists and filmmakers. So, the festival guests were able to attend lectures from the Skolkovo Open University, the popular science physical show of Mikhail Klepikov, the popular science lecture “Nano Today” by Maxim Shcherbakov and much more.
