Graffiti as a lifestyle and the right to be happy

ST. PETERSBURG. Czech film about women involved graffiti was exhibited at the street art museum.

The documentary film Girl Power is a story about one of the branches of modern art that changes the face of modern cities. Women participate in this transformation more and more actively, simultaneously fighting gender stereotypes and supporting each other. The winged expression of girl power gained popularity with the light hand of the famous British “peppercorns”, the British pop group Spice Girls. For the struggle of the weaker sex for their rights in a world imprisoned on men, it fits perfectly.

This is also the opinion of Sany, who became the first graffiti writer in Prague as a teenager. The hobby grew into a vocation, for which she decided to leave a well-paid job and did not regret it a bit. Sany is not only a talented freelance artist, but also a regular shooter of various graffiti events, an organizer of street art exhibitions and various cultural projects, a street art teacher for children.

Filming took place from 2009 to 2016 in the largest cities in the world, including in Prague. Technical assistance at the final stage was provided by Czech television. But all the costs fell on the shoulders of Sany and her friends. Girl Power is a story about a Czech artist and about the same enthusiasts who live on different continents, about the history of the subculture itself and about its brightest representatives. The film is not only about graffiti, but also about the right of women to do what they love and the future, without regard to the opinions of others, the right to happiness and self-realization.

The St. Petersburg Museum of Street Art, located on the territory of the functioning plant of laminated plastics, is only two years old. In the abandoned industrial zone, various events, master classes, exhibitions of art objects are held.
