180 artists will take part in the XI Biennale in Cuba

About 180 artists from 43 countries will take part in the 11th Havana Biennale. The exhibition opens on May 11 under the motto of the social significance of art.

Until June 11, Havana will become a huge exhibition hall, where exhibits will be arranged on the streets and in public places of the city, such as Vedado and St. Augustine.

Most of the invited artists are from Latin America, but this year, a special place is given to contemporary African art, which will be represented by fourteen authors from Africa.

The United States will also be widely represented not only by artists, such as Andres Serrano and photographer Craig Shilito, but by more than 1300 "cultural tourists." Americans are actively booking tours to Cuba to enjoy this biennale.

“Cuba is not going to shut itself off from the Americans. With art, culture, we can find many points of contact between two different realities, ”said Jorge Fernandez, director of the Center for Contemporary Art Vilfredo Lama and head of the press conference of the Biennale, presenting the event.

This year, the organizers invited both young artists from around the world, as well as already famous figures of contemporary art. Among those invited to the biennale are the controversial Austrian artist German Nich, Marina Abramovich from Serbia, the Russian-American couple Ilya and Emilia Kabakova, the universal Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco.
