The painting of Cranach Jr. "Hercules at the court of Queen Omfala" will be restored

MADRID. Restoration work on the painting "Hercules at the Court of Omphale", by German artist Hans Cranach (1513-1537), is the main goal of the agreement, which will be signed on Monday German Ambassador to Spain, Reinhardt Silberberg and Managing Director of the Thyssen-Bornemisz Museum Evelio Acevedo.

The agreement will become part of a project supported by the Heritage Program of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which extends to a number of restoration and research works in the field of art, the purpose of which should also be to clarify the work techniques of the great masters of painting.

The work is planned to be completed within six to eight months. The work, created by Hans Cranach, the son of Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), interested scientists with the steppe of elaboration of details and the accuracy of the artist’s smear.

The painting "Hercules at the Court of Queen Omfala" (1537) depicts an episode from the life of a character from Greek mythology who killed his friend in a power struggle and was sold by Hermes to Queen Omfale, who made him her slave for three years. After the restoration, the public will appreciate the work in which Hercules is depicted sitting surrounded by three women judges, probably the daughters of the queen.
