The German collector refused to cooperate with museums in England because of the country’s exit from the EU

EDINBURGH. Leading German collector Heiner Pietzsch announced that he would not provide art from his personal collection to museums in England if the country left the European Union. Instead, Pitch is ready to collaborate with museums in Scotland.

Heiner and Ulla Pitch lent nearly 60 works from their contemporary art collection to the Scottish National Gallery of Art for the Surreal Encounters summer exhibition, prepared with the participation of museums from Rotterdam and Hamburg. Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, which included works by Dali, Picasso, Magritte and Miro, Pitch said: “We provided paintings of Scotland because Scotland will remain within the EU.”

Commenting on Pitch’s words, London-based art dealer James Mayor suggested that England’s exit from the European Union could be a “disaster” for the art market, adding: “This event will not affect sales in America, but it will seriously affect sales in Europe, because now, in order to sell a painting, you’ll have to import it into Europe, which means paying an additional tax, which in some countries reaches 27%. ” The matter is not limited to additional financial expenses. According to May, bureaucratic procedures will become much more complicated, and all factors together will have more than serious consequences.
