Prince Vladimir and the beginning of Christian art in Russia.

May 22 in the exhibition hall of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts at 6 st. Lenin, 104, will open the exhibition "Prince Vladimir and the beginning of Christian art in Russia" (to the 1000th anniversary of the memory of Holy Prince Vladimir).

The personality of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich (about 955–1015) and his role in the history of Kievan Rus are widely known and special literature is devoted to them. There is also a literary portrait of the ruler, created on the basis of various sources. The baptism of Russia and the results of Christianization in historical memory remained as his greatest merit, which can be estimated taking into account the then situation. There was a great deal of work ahead, first to instill a Christian doctrine, to create a church structure, and then to do extensive temple construction, book writing and the development of sacred art. All this became the beginning of a new Christian spiritual culture for Russia, which was successively connected with its Byzantine sources.

Christianity existed in Russia even before Prince Vladimir, in the form of small disparate communities whose origin dates back to the second half of the 9th century. But there is no need to talk about the development of church art in their midst during this period.

The exhibition runs from May 22 to June 21, 2015 in the exhibition hall of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (104 Lenin St.).
