Alexander Solzhenitsyn was born in December 1918 and lived, according to Anna Akhmatova, “not a calendar — a real Twentieth Century”: after a fatherless childhood and youth — war, front; from the age of 26 - prisons, camps, exile; fatal disease; the life of a provincial teacher concealing his writing; the rise of fame with the publication of "One Day by Ivan Denisovich" and almost immediately - a wall that blocked the way for his next books; open dissent, “butting” with the authorities; KGB hunt for his manuscripts; explosion of the “Gulag Archipelago”, expulsion from the USSR; life in exile; homecoming in the 1990s.
“I wanted to be a memory. In memory of the people who suffered a great disaster, ”the writer saw his creative task. The main themes of his works - the choice and responsibility of a person in the face of trials - remain relevant in any historical era and in any country. The Nobel Committee expressed worldwide recognition of the creative work of Alexander Solzhenitsyn by awarding the prize with the wording: "For the moral strength with which he continued the eternal tradition of Russian literature."
