Avilov depicted the battle that took place between the Russian bogatyr and the Tatar warrior. It was with him that the battle on the Kulikovo field began. Description of Mikhail Avilov’s painting "The Duel between Peresvet and Chelubey".
Avilov depicted the battle that took place between the Russian bogatyr and the Tatar warrior. It was with him that the battle on the Kulikovo field began.
Avilov painted this canvas when the defense of Stalingrad was going on. The artist said that the composition of his painting is incredibly simple. In the center we see two horses, soaring on their hooves. Peresvet is sitting on them - on the left and Chelubey - on the right.
The artist depicts the main characters in a very close-up manner. They completely overshadow everything else depicted on this canvas. Avilov deliberately exaggerated their gigantic strength and gigantic stature. He brought them to a truly pathos-like sound that is characteristic of bylinas.
The painter raises the figures of the depicted giant horses above the plain. They look like bizarre pyramids.
The colors are most intense precisely in the depiction of the two main characters. The armies, which are visible somewhere far behind them, are deliberately painted very faintly. The horses look really frightening. Their manes flutter belligerently and their mouths are completely grinning.
The artist uses a bizarre play of colors to convey the colors of a certain state of warriors. On the left, a gray hue dominates. It speaks of maximum confidence and excellent stamina of the soldiers. The warriors anxiously await the outcome of this grand battle. But at the same time they stand unwaveringly, like a rock of granite. In front of the army Avilov drew Dmitry Donskoy himself on a white horse.
To depict the army of the Tatar-Mongols, the painter chooses motley and bright hues. This suggests that the enemy is completely unsure of his forces. He doubts whether he will be able to win or will have to surrender at the mercy of the victor.
Avilov’s canvas is as expressive as possible. Everyone is waiting for the denouement. The artist masterfully conveys the pending tension.

Its a very famous painting. I remember seeing it in textbooks when I was in elementary school.

The painting is wonderful, but Alexander Peresvet was a monk at the monastery of St. Sergius of Radonezh and was wearing monastic robes.

A painting is a work of art.
Its beautiful, but not historically accurate, as Peresvet was only without armor when he was in his monastic robes.
Peresvet was not a monk. Since monks and hermits are forbidden from carrying weapons. Moreover, Peresvet and his brother Oslyabya have names that are more ancestral than Christian. Therefore, they could not wear monastic robes.
To claim that Peresvet (a pagan warrior name, which is absurd for a Christian monk!) was a monk at the time of the Battle of Kulikovo suggests someone completely unfamiliar with the nuances of military life. For example, they might not understand that acquiring and maintaining combat skills requires constant practice, for numerous reasons. Its like taking a potential champion weightlifter, keeping them away from training for several years, and then throwing them onto the Olympic platform at the very last moment.
I also used to think that Peresvet was a monk, but after visiting the Kulikovo field, I changed my opinion. Theres an inscription on one of the many memorial stones that says Eternal memory to Prince Peresvet and the Bryansk detachment.
Its not a literal translation, but the meaning is clear. It definitely mentions Prince Peresvet, and its written exactly like that. He was from my region.
But there arent any paintings of this battle in the museum, and actually no paintings about the battle at all, which I found disappointing.
Peresvet was a monk from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra who had been sent to battle.
What century is this painting from? Please answer; its very important!!!! PLEASE!!!
The eternal struggle between Europe and Asia in the Russian soul. The result is neither one nor the other (both are lost). I might buy it and hang it on the wall. And then, Im going to hang myself next to it. :)
