An unknown painting by William Turner has been discovered.
A previously unknown work by William Turner has been found in the United Kingdom. This information was reported by the Daily Mail news agency.
The oil painting was purchased eight years ago at a regional auction for £3,700. At the time, the organizers of the sale were not sure who painted it, but Turners name was on the list of possible authors. The initial asking price for the lot was only £500, but buyer Jonathan Will was not afraid to raise the bid several times.
Immediately after the purchase, the owner ordered a number of expert appraisals of the painting and, after a fairly long wait, received a unanimous answer: the painting Fishing Boats and Strong Wind was painted by William Turner. The famous British painter is believed to have worked on it around 1800-1810, at the same time as he was creating another masterpiece, The Battle of Trafalgar.
Currently, the value of Fishing Boats and Strong Wind is estimated by experts at £20 million. The most expensive painting by Turner is Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino, which was purchased for almost £30 million two years ago by representatives of the Getty Museum.
