Igor Dremin: Maxim Kireev. BW. My Favorites Automatic translate
«B / W. Selected « - the next personal photo exhibition of Maxim Kireev. A simple and concise title speaks for itself, clearly indicating what will be discussed. And the fact that the famous Moscow artist in his 55th birthday turns to the origins of the classic photo, to her black and white image - is absolutely logical and logical.
The chosen genre of landscape is also natural, allowing the author to make an excursion into the past, to those countries and cities where he managed to visit (at the exhibition, of course, the geography of the artist’s trips is far from complete), to resurrect inimitable beauty and charm of those places. To relive, experienced early feelings and emotions, mentally passing through already familiar places.
The exhibition consists of thirty-six photographs depicting European and Russian cities. To the credit of the author, Maxim Kireev always carefully selects all photos for his exhibition exposures himself. Thanks to this self-critical selection and thoughtful method of presentation, the artist most accurately expresses his attitude to the exhibited material. He always sees himself not only as an author, but also as a spectator.
Photography, as the most democratic art form, directly connected with reality, allows the artist in his works to show this reality as an unstable process. After all, when reality appears before us in the form of photography, it already loses the status of objectivity. The picture ceases to show reality, it itself becomes a reality, incorporating what is contained in the person who does it: this is a process of cognition, where feeling and perception are inseparable. This is subjective realism, capable of telling about the world more than any documentary evidence. Here, conscious restraint in the form and emotional appeal to what they see appear as defining the effective forces of photography. The author often strives to achieve maximum expressiveness through minimizing the means, remaining adherent to the artistic principles of his friend and teacher IB. Porto, who believed that «art should not be wordy, it must be expressive in its forms, its lines, color, it must be kept and dignified.»
Photographs by Maxim Kireev are characterized by a clear organization and completeness of compositional solutions. And the works presented at this exhibition are no exception. This is not a nostalgic walk through documentarily fixed memorial sites. The photographic image here is a formulated memory. Since, in the opinion of Matthias Flugge, at the moment of creating the snapshot it is already past. The surrounding world and the world of the artist’s thoughts and feelings are also fixed.
Photography turns the story into a narrative in time, and the author’s intonations convey the experience and interest in what is happening in both cultural and aesthetic aspects. And here the personal contact of the viewer with every photo is important, where the author tries to tell the whole story in every single and unique frozen moment. And it is unlikely that any other of visual visual means is better than artistic photography, in order to reveal deeper levels of significance of the world depicted by the artist.
