Images and symbols in V. Motorins painting Saint Dmitry Donskoy, Great Prince of Moscow.
First, let us consider the key figure in the painting. Dmitry Ivanovich, Grand Prince of Moscow and Grand Prince of Vladimir, was born in 1350 in Moscow. He received the nickname Donskoy for his victory in the Battle of Kulikovo, which took place in 1380 on the Kulikovo field, near the Don River, and became a decisive factor in the struggle against the Golden Horde. The victory in this battle played a huge role in the further development of the Moscow principality. It was under Dmitry Donskoy that the Moscow principality began to develop rapidly, gaining enormous strength and power.
A distinctive feature of V. Motorins painting is that Grand Prince Dmitry is depicted not on the battlefield, as can be seen in the works of many other artists, but against the backdrop of Moscow, his homeland, his state. It should also be noted that the prince is without a helmet, and with his hand on his heart. The fact that he is without a helmet corresponds to the peaceful background of the painting, but he is still wearing armor, as if showing that he is always ready to protect and help his homeland. Behind the prince, one can see how Moscows defensive walls are being built, which shows how rapidly the city is developing. It is also not by chance that the titles Saint and believer are mentioned in the title of the painting, because Prince Dmitry always preserved and protected Orthodoxy, which can be seen in the painting in the form of white churches.
I think the main idea of this amazing painting is to remind us that Dmitry Donskoy achieved great victories and accomplished great deeds solely for his homeland and his people.
Matrin. Saint, Pious, Great Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy
The 14th century in Russian history is an era of continued struggle by the people against the Golden Horde.
Moscow Prince Dmitry Ivanovich of the Rurik dynasty is known as the victor over Mamais army at the Battle of Kulikovo Field in 1380.
Dmitry Donskoy has been dedicated to dozens of novels and scientific studies. Among the painters who turned to the image of the great prince is Viktor Matrin, a young Moscow artist – a graduate of the Penza Art School and the Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after V. M. Vasnetsov.
The historical theme permeates all of Matrins work. The image of Dmitry Donskoy is depicted in the work Saint, Pious, Great Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy.
In the painting, Dmitry Ivanovich is shown against the backdrop of the white-stone Moscow Kremlin, which was built during his reign as Prince of Moscow. The reconstruction of the wooden fortress took place from 1366 to 1368. The image of the prince without a headdress or helmet, with his right hand over his heart, symbolizes his historical role in the formation of the medieval Russian state. Peace and love for his land, which needed to be built and strengthened, protected from numerous enemies, are read in the calm pose of a strong warrior, peace and strength of spirit – in his eyes. The glints of sunlight on the metal armor and facades of the white-stone cathedrals, and the dark cumulonimbus clouds – as a symbol of the struggle between good and evil.
Essay
Victor Matorin, a relatively young artist who is our contemporary, was born in 1971. Its all the more surprising that he chose historical themes as his focus in painting. His painting Saint Dmitry Donskoy, Grand Prince of Moscow depicts one of the great Russian princes, the great-grandson of the greatest military leader Alexander Nevsky, Prince Dmitry Donskoy.
The great commander and worthy heir to his great-grandfather appears before us in all his masculine, restrained beauty. The artist portrays him as an ordinary person, tired from battles and with a hand on his heart. Against the backdrop of Moscow depicted in the background, this gesture is perceived as an acknowledgment that the most important values are those represented behind his large, powerful figure. He seems to protect everything that is dear to him and his people from evil, violence, and injustice. Thanks to Dmitry Donskoy, Rus won a great victory in the Battle of Kulikovo Field. This victory cannot be underestimated, as it forced the Tatar-Mongol yoke to stop, and eventually cease to exist.
Victor Matorin masterfully conveys in his works everything related to that distant world in which Rus was only beginning to take shape. People who look at his paintings understand that knowledge of history is necessary for all generations in our country, because if a people can afford to forget the past, then it has no future.
Here is my essay:
Viktor Matarin is a contemporary Moscow painter born in 1971. Despite the current preference for portraits and landscapes in painting, Viktor did not follow trends and chose the genre of historical painting.
Matarins entire body of work celebrates the greatness of his homeland. The main theme for his paintings is the history of the 18th century, and many works are dedicated to the Battle of Kulikovo.
One such painting is Saint Righteous Great Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy. Prince Dmitry was born in 1350 and received his epithet Donskoy after defeating Mamais army on the Kulikovo field – between the Don and Nepryadva rivers. He was canonized as a saint only in 1988.
Viktor Matarin pays much attention to historical landscapes, depicting old Russian churches, fortresses, and cities. In the painting, Prince Dmitry stands against the background of the buildings of the Kremlin. This can be seen as an allegory, because in history, Grand Duke Donskoy is remembered for dedicating his life to uniting the Russian lands and freeing them from the Tatars.
The pose and attire of the prince show that during his lifetime, Dmitry Donskoy was not only a warrior but also a pious and wise ruler. He founded the Uspensky Monastery, as well as the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy is an image of the ideal ruler, endowed with Christian virtues. This is evidenced by the fact that the artist depicted the prince against the background of white Kremlin walls, rather than in the midst of a great battle.

The background is a vibrant depiction of medieval Moscow, with its iconic onion-domed churches and bustling riverfront. Boats navigate the water, and people are seen engaged in daily activities, bringing the historical setting to life. The sky above is dramatic, with swirling clouds that add to the epic feel of the scene.
The subtext of the painting is multifaceted. Dmitry Donskoy is presented as a devout ruler, as indicated by the placement of his hand on his heart, a gesture often associated with piety and solemnity. His armor and weaponry signify him as a strong military leader, a protector of his people and land. The presence of Moscows prominent religious buildings in the background reinforces the idea of a holy Russia, with its spiritual and temporal leaders united. The overall mood is one of strength, faith, and patriotic pride, celebrating a pivotal figure in Russian history known for his victory over the Golden Horde at the Battle of Kulikovo.
