Landscapes of Latvia by Wilhelm Purvites

The State Art Museum of Belarus continues to invite residents of Minsk to the beautiful exhibition "Spring", composed of the best works of Wilhelm Purvites, a master whose work has become the national treasure of Latvia.

A feature of this person was a deep interest in life, love for his country and a passionate desire to develop art in all available ways. He not only revealed himself, but did everything to give the world the fruits of the works of other artists.

Being the rector of the Latvian Academy of Arts, he had a huge influence on the formation of young talents. Being an authoritative person, he did his best to create numerous exhibitions of Latvian art and presented it in Europe and Scandinavia.

He received international recognition back in 1900 at the world art exhibition held in Paris. The presented work “Last Rays” received a bronze medal of the 3rd degree. Further, the awards went on as usual: a gold medal in Munich, gold in Lyon, a "cross" for services, etc. And fame did not stop him from praising the beauty of his own country and creating magnificent works of art.

Learning from nature itself, he used all means of expression that were available to him. Expression and lyricism intertwined and gave birth to lively and radiant images. Paying the greatest attention to composition, light, tectonics, the rhythm of lines, the contrast of colors, the master was especially known for his special, psychological approach to the display of snow. It is not surprising that his “Portrait of Snow” is truly admired even by those who are far from art. His works seem “native” even to residents of other countries. The exhibition runs until December 15th.
