Altar sculpture and art fabrics of Belarus XVII – XIX centuries.

On December 14, an exhibition dedicated to the Belarusian altar sculpture and art fabrics was opened at the Minsk Art Museum. The exposition, whose deadline is scheduled for January 21 of next year, was composed of works stored in the funds of the National Art Museum of Belarus.

The exhibition was about 30 pieces of altar sculpture, created in the Baroque era. Religious wooden images in that era were very popular. Since wood is affordable and very convenient for processing material. In addition, it has warm energy, which was so much valued earlier in Orthodox churches, brings it closer to nature, makes high truths more understandable and accessible.

Wooden sculptures have been stored in the collections for a long time, even during the Soviet Union, the museum managed to save more than 500 unique works. Some were half destroyed, so the restorers had to work hard to restore their original appearance.

Most of the items presented in the museum are first available to the general public in the first, after they are removed from the churches and attempted destruction. However, some of them have already visited museums in Moscow and Minsk.

Wooden sculptures were performed by masters of their craft - professional woodcarvers. However, lovers also had the opportunity to embody the images of their beloved saints in a tree. In this case, their work is distinguished by naivety, kindness and extreme sincerity, which fully compensates for the lack of training.

The exhibition is diluted with cult fabrics designed to create clothes for liturgies. Therefore, visitors have the opportunity to see beautiful examples of artistic weaving.
