Works by V. Milashevsky from the Voronezh Museum at an exhibition in Moscow

MOSCOW. Beginning on October 9, the Pushkin Museum opened an exhibition of works by the artist Vladimir Milashevsky, who became famous for the illustrations he created for Russian and foreign classical literature. Several generations of Russian readers got acquainted with the artist’s work, reading books decorated with drawings.

Young reading enthusiasts enjoyed watching illustrations accompanying Pushkin’s tale of the cunning worker Balda, and at an older age they were presented by the characters of Balzac’s novels, in hand-drawn images born of the imagination of Vladimir Milashevsky.

In the collections of many Russian museums there are works by the artist. Naturally, the collection of the Museum of A. S. Pushkin also has the works of Vladimir Milashevsky. The museum has a permanent exhibition designed for children, which demonstrates wonderful illustrations made by the artist to Pushkin’s tales. The museum staff repeatedly showed drawings by Milashevsky at thematic exhibitions.

To the creation of an exhibition dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Vladimir Milashevsky. Museum staff approached in a special way. This time the exposition is made up of the artist’s works, first presented in the capital. More than fifty graphic works were brought to the Pushkin Museum from Voronezh, where in the Art Museum. Kramskoy is the bulk of the work of Milashevsky.

In addition to illustrations familiar to every reader from childhood, for the beloved fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse”, the exhibition presents the artist’s illustrations to more serious works of classical writers. The exhibition “Illustration as Fidelity to Style” also included portraits of contemporaries of Milashevsky and self-portraits.

A unique exhibition is available until November 25th.
