Salvador Dali exhibition in the Hermitage moved to next year

ST. PETERSBURG. The Hermitage once again canceled the exhibition of paintings of Spanish surrealism. The main place in the exposition was to be occupied by the works of Salvador Dali from the collection of the Dali Theater and Museum in Figueres, as well as paintings by the best surrealists of Catalonia from the collection of the Juan Miro Foundation and the National Museum of Catalan Art.

Initially, the exhibition “Salvador Dali and the artists of Ampurdan. Surrealism in Catalonia ”was supposed to open in St. Petersburg in December last year. (Ampurdan is a small town in the province of Girona, in northern Spain, near Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dali). Then the opening date was postponed to the end of March, and now it is completely canceled. According to one of the museum staff, the leadership of the Hermitage is still negotiating with the Spanish side. Officially, the reasons for the transfer and cancellation of the exhibition are not called. Perhaps, by the end of 2014, the exhibition will not arrive in Russia. Instead, the museum can be seen including paintings by Russian artists landscapes , portraits, historical painting. All other planned exhibitions will be held in the Hermitage according to the schedule.

Note that the last major exhibition of works by the great and scandalous Spanish painter in Russia took place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow in 2011. In September of this year, the Dali and the Media exhibition is scheduled to be held, where not only Dali’s works commissioned by newspapers and magazines, but also his own photographs of the artist for the covers of publications are presented. However, the exhibition of paintings by Salvador Dali in St. Petersburg is of particular importance - oddly enough, but in the collections of museums in the city there is not a single work by a magnificent Spaniard.
