The 155th anniversary of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov on the Don was celebrated on a grand scale

TAGANROG. In the Rostov Region, the Year of Literature began with the celebration of the 155th anniversary of A.P. Chekhov. The main events were held in the homeland of the Russian classic in Taganrog. The guests of the celebrations agreed that Anton Pavlovich would surely be pleased with the attention given: everywhere were his books and portraits, performances and competitions were also held, and the guests did not skimp on kind words addressed to Chekhov.

In Taganrog, a wonderful tradition has developed over the years - to celebrate the birthday of the great classic for almost a week. So, the celebrations this year began with the laying of flowers at the monument to the writer on the morning of January 29. “155 years have passed since the birth of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. Another 200 years will pass, but his works will still be read and loved. They will never become obsolete. Dear friends, we will read more. Happy Birthday and the beginning of the Year of Literature in Russia, ”Valentina Marinova, chairman of the Rostov Region Legislative Assembly committee on education, culture, science, relations with public associations and an information policy, congratulated Chekhov at the monument.

This year in honor of the 155th anniversary of A.P. The organizers prepared a special program for Chekhov: for the first time, the Literary Museum presented the genuine things of the Russian writer for wide viewing.

“These days the Taganrog Museum-Reserve has launched a unique project. Everyone was invited to a special event to read Chekhov’s works aloud, ”said Alexander Shcherbin, the curator of the Chekhov Foundation of the Taganrog Museum-Reserve. “I read, as in an exam. Here I felt the atmosphere of Chekhov gymnasium and a place saturated with memory. When you read, a picture immediately appears, at that moment you fully imagine the mise en scene, as well as how it happens. I think this project is interesting. It is important enough. Both adults and children need this, ”commented Igor Guskov, First Deputy Governor of the Rostov Region.

For a whole week Taganrog hosted performances and competitions, vernissages, music parlors, meetings with writers, theatrical tours and even tastings of dishes described in Chekhov’s works. An evening “Writer and Music" was held in the Alferaki Palace, at which not only a wonderful concert was shown, but also a unique exhibition of books, notes and rarities, somehow related to the musical preferences of the writer, was organized. “There are things that exist in a single copy. For example, a book-collection of stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov “Gloomy people”, dedicated to P. I. Tchaikovsky. By the way, this year we will also celebrate the anniversary of the composer, ”explained Alla Tsymbal, senior researcher at the Taganrog Museum-Reserve.

Celebrations also took place in the Chekhov Theater. Literary scholars and simply guests of the event consider it deeply symbolic that the Year of Literature in Russia began with the celebration of the Don writer’s Birthday, whose works are known to the whole world.
