The British philologist donated a large archive of documents to the Esenin Museum

KNITTING. Esenin Museum in the village of Konstantinovo received several thousand invaluable documents from a professor of Russian studies from England Gordon McVay.

Unexpected in its generosity and scale, the gift of the British scientist, the author of several books about Yesenin, opened a new page in the study of the poet’s work and literary movements in the first third of the 20th century. The volume of the transferred archive - several thousand documents - allows us to hope for interesting research results and sensational discoveries. The list and variety of priceless relics is impressive. Posters, postcards, letters, Yesenin and Duncan telegrams sent during the foreign voyage, photographs, souvenirs, records, books of McVeigh himself. The museum in Konstantinov also received at its disposal the memories of the students of Duncan, who studied at her school of dance.

Here is a considerable part of the impressive epistolary heritage - extensive correspondence with many Russian writers and philologists. In the section of manuscripts are letters of the poet himself and famous people from his entourage, the originals of the works of imagists: Klyuev, Ivnev, Mariengof, Shershenevich. The investigations of McVeigh helped for the first time to publish several dozens of later works of the peasant poet Nikolay Alekseevich Klyuyev repressed and shot in 1937.

The materials collected by McVey in the library and museum archives while studying in Moscow in the mid-60s formed the basis of the doctoral dissertation on Yesenin. The British philologist is the author of several hundred articles repeatedly reprinted in the West of the books Yesenin. Life ”and“ Isadora and Yesenin ”, as well as interesting studies of the work of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.
