A summary of "The Adept of the Heather Moors" by Maria Danilova

A strange driver, Sigmund, drops her off right in the forest. The bus literally vanishes into thin air. Emerging onto a vast field of heather, Rada sees a huge Gothic building with a central tower. A friendly flock of witches on brooms flutters around the structure. The girl is shocked and faints right there in the clearing. Bronislav, or simply Bronya, catches her just in time. The young man introduces himself as the head of the Guard. He calmly explains that VAU stands for Higher Algiron University. A wide variety of supernatural disciplines are studied there. Rada is terrified. The girl asks to be sent home immediately. Bronya agrees. The young man takes the student to the Rector for official permission to leave.

The Disappearance of the Rector and New Talents

A powerful trap is triggered near the Rector’s office. Armor is thrown into the opposite wall by destructive magic.

Rada’s wristwatch stops instantly. The mechanism registers the faintest trace of alien magic. The arriving Guardians establish the disappearance of the University Head. Bronya declares that Rada is obligated to remain until a deputy is officially appointed. The girl is the only direct witness to the incident.

The student is forced to accept the situation. She begins attending general introductory lectures. The teachers demonstrate the wonders of necromancy, herbalism, combat magic, and complex illusions.

During a practical necromancy lesson, a gigantic time spirit suddenly emerges from Rada’s stopped watch. The disembodied creature frightens all the applicants. The guards quickly seal the ghost in a small glass pendant. Rada wears this artifact around her neck as the main lead in her investigation.

The Heritage of the Moorlands

The chief witch of the wasteland, Gretel, recognizes a student as the spitting image of her former partner, Eliza. A startling fact is revealed: Rada’s grandmother was a powerful hereditary witch. Eliza left the WAU for a happy family life, but later died tragically. She was tracking a brutal order of witch hunters and was unable to return home. Rada embraces her natural heritage and is officially enrolled in the Witchcraft faculty.

A young student acquires a grumpy, talking familiar. A black cat named Chernysh becomes her main guide into the world of witchcraft. Classes prove rigorous and extremely difficult. Students must sew their own robes without using household magic. Assembling the right broom and learning to brew complex potions are also extremely challenging. Rada’s potential leaves much to be desired from the start.

Shadow Art and Necromancy

Rada’s second specialization remains a mystery for a long time. After some time, the student is summoned by the mysterious Shadow Master. The man informs her that she is endowed with a rare gift. Training in the art of shadows is extremely difficult. Rada must learn to blend into the shadows and anticipate her mentor’s sudden, deadly attacks. The Shadow Master often appears behind the student, holding a cold blade to her throat.

Meanwhile, the girl becomes close to her deskmate. The albino necromancer Krich constantly summons terrifying undead creatures. His pet is the half-dead dragon Zhryaka. Despite his sinister appearance, Krich proves to be a loyal comrade. Rada discovers her gift for artifact making — the skill of creating super-powerful amulets. Her first such creation is the legendary "nevirion" amulet. Students immediately form a huge line to buy Rada’s magical creations.

Hunters and the Rescue of the Rector

The story arc takes a sharp turn. During a harmless walk in the forest, Rada is attacked by an unknown man with a dagger. The attack is prevented by the Shadow Master, who emerges from the protective darkness. Later, the student is attacked inside the VAU building itself. The loyal Guardian, Bronya, strengthens the corridors’ defenses and distributes additional protective artifacts to the witches.

Studying a strange clue from a destroyed office, Rada and Bronya decipher a secret message from the missing Rector. The numerical code points directly to a specific library book. The text describes a specific toxic trap. The Rector was not kidnapped. The Head of the University voluntarily locked himself in a dimension, escaping from a traitor within his own guards. The friends manage to deactivate the trap just hours before the prisoner’s inevitable death. The traitor turns out to be the Narrow-Faced Guardian, Gimin. The man had long been working as a hidden witch hunter.

Climax in an abandoned castle

The first academic year is drawing to a close. Students are sent on a mandatory, dangerous field trip under the supervision of a senior. Qi healer Listan assembles a team to clear the area. The group includes Rada, the illusionist Il Kahn, and Crown Prince Revek. The squad sets out for the gloomy, abandoned castle of Enival, shrouded in infamy.

Within the stone walls, the students encounter ancient curses, hordes of hungry zombies, and an enraged banshee. Il Kang demonstrates astonishing blade skills, bravely fighting stone statues and undead. The Crown Prince accidentally summons a fiery phoenix. The team is forced to flee the rampaging bird at full speed. The students miraculously manage to calm the local spirits and deactivate all the magical traps.

Ambush at the gate

On the way back, the weary group is met by a fresh squad of armed hunters. The masked criminals demand that the witch Rada be handed over to them. The students flatly refuse to betray their friend and engage in a battle that is clearly uneven.

Rada actively uses unstable shadow portals to move wounded allies away from the piercing blades. Senior student Qi Listan saves the situation. The elf casts an area-of-effect combat spell. The damage is greatly increased by the gifted "Nevirium" amulet. The hunters are defeated by a devastating magical wave. The team safely returns to the safety of the University through a dimensional tunnel. The rector praises the first-years for their bravery.

The denouement and the hidden threat

The exams are successfully completed. The Shadow Master accepts Rada’s final exam on portal travel. As they part, pent-up romantic feelings flare between mentor and student. The Master bids the girl a warm farewell, offering hope for a continuation of their relationship next semester. Rada bids farewell to her cat, Chernysh, Il Kahn, and the necromancer, Krich. She leaves the blooming moorlands.

In a short epilogue, two unknown men watch Rada from the depths of the forest as she departs. The figures quietly discuss her direct relationship to the late Eliza. The elder of them firmly orders his loyal subordinate to act without delay.

The enemies render their final verdict. The young witch must not, under any circumstances, survive to graduation. At this intriguing moment, the story ends.
