The history of the emergence of grunge music from 1980 to the present day

Birth (1980-1990)

Initially, grunge music spread throughout Seattle. The formation of the usual attributes fell on this period. Starting from the style of clothing and ending with a sound that contains elements of metal and punk rock. This is expressed in weighty bass and low tunings.

The genre was largely ignored by Seattle. Most of the journalists paid attention to New York and Los Angeles. The name of the music was born in 1981 when musician Mark Arm wrote to Desperate Times describing his own music group Mr. Epp and the Calculations as follows: “Complete dirt! Sheer noise! Complete shit! " Then the word "grunge" was first used.

By 1984, many Seattle bands began mixing metal and punk music. A special place in the genre is occupied by The U-Men, whose work has formed the usual grunge. Subsequently, after it, other associations appeared, playing in this genre. These included The Fartz, 10 Minute Warning, Fastbacks, and The Accsed. In many ways, their music became the basis for a new direction.

Closer to the second half of the 80s, the originality of Seattle music began to find its followers outside the city. This is how the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. Sonic. Grunge began to come to Russian music

And it is the creativity of these people that will have a great influence on Kurt Cobain and push him to create his own group - Nirvana.

The specificity of the performer’s music became the dissimilarity to other well-known genres. The team used the most non-standard and unpopular motives, which still grabbed a huge audience. With the development of creativity, Cobain tried to use chords incomprehensible to most, but the popularity of Nirvana only increased.

Division and decline (1990-2000)

With the onset of the 90s, a new musical direction called postgrange began to emerge. It was divided into two subgenres:

The first is characterized by a soft sound reminiscent of hard rock or alternative rock.

The second has a heavy sound, typical of nu metal.

The famous postgrnage collective Theory. They were previously known as Theory of a Deadman.

In the music industry, the first option is common, due to its light, compared to the second, sound.

Against the background of post-grunge gaining strength, the main genre was gradually losing popularity. After the death of Kurt Cobain, this became even more noticeable. Pearl Jam also did their part, canceling the tour due to a conflict with the ticket company Ticketmaster, and Alice in Chains with the vocalist’s deteriorating condition.

Second breath (2000-present)

Grunge entered the 21st century half-dead. The post-grunge became more popular, more pleasant for both the listener and the music labels. The few remaining bands enjoyed the remnants of their former glory. Pearl Jam, at the beginning of the 2000s, remained the only known band. At the same time, Alice in Chains continued to look for a replacement for the deceased Lane Stacy.

In 2004, Pixies resumed their activities. Gradually, other well-known representatives of the trend began to return to the industry. News outlets such as the Guardian and The Seattle Times covered newcomers to the genre. Groups such as Dinosaur Pile-Up, Wonderswan and Pulled Apart by Horses appeared on the pages of newspapers.

Amid the resurgence of legends and the emergence of new ambitious musicians, the media rushed to announce the revival of grunge.
