ST. PETERSBURG. The first performance of the big tour of the Tatar National Theater, shown on the BDT stage, was the play of Blue Shawl by Karim Tinchurin. This performance, running since 1926 in the national theater, has long become a legend. Now, after 30 years since the last theater’s arrival in St. Petersburg from Kazan, it has again been introduced to Petersburg theatergoers.

Theater named after Kamala, celebrating its 110th anniversary this season, is one of the country’s oldest national theater groups, known not only in Russia. For the Republic of Tatarstan, this outstanding team has become a real flagship of stage art. Most of the theater’s repertoire consists of plays written by prominent Tatar playwrights, but theater directors do not forget the classics.

On the stage of the theater. Kamala can see performances based on the works of Moliere, Chekhov, Gogol. Tatar artists are warmly received by spectators of all Russian cities where they come on tour. The theater team is often invited to prestigious festivals held abroad. Since 1998, the theater, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, has held the Nauruz Theater Festival, in which Turkic-speaking theaters participate.

Tatar artists brought to Petersburg the best performances of their theater, most of which are funny comedies. Viewers have already seen on April 6 the play “Khoja Nasretdin”, which appeared in the theater’s repertoire last season. The next day, the musical comedy “Son-in-arms of Gergy” will be presented, and a day later the audience will see the February premiere of “Don Juan”. Then comedy “Bankrupt” will follow and on April 10 will complete the St. Petersburg tour performance “Belated Summer”, where St. Petersburg audience will see the leading artists of the theater.
