1991. Lubyanka Square. It is generally accepted that during perestroika all Chekists were desperately opposed to change. This is not true. The KGB environment was not at all a monolith. The State Security Committee of the RSFSR, established in May 1991, firmly sided with Yeltsin. After the August coup, radically-minded Russian deputies demanded that the state security committee be dissolved. The leaders of the KGB of the RSFSR saved the agency from defeat. The main task that the reformers set themselves was to make the KGB safe for society by changing the name, but without changing the KGB apparatus.
