Concert of the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra conducted by Gergiev in Tomsk

TOMSK. The beginning of the traditional Easter tour and the “run-in” of a new concert grand piano - a concert of the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra conducted by Gergiev took place in one of the oldest cities in Siberia.

The program of the Easter tour includes the works of Sergei Prokofiev, for whom this year was a jubilee. His second concert for piano and orchestra was performed by Alexei Volodin, a student of Tatyana Zelikman and Eliso Virsaladze, a graduate of the piano academy on Lake Como, where only a select few fall. The laureate of the Concours Géza Anda Competition has firmly established the image of an intellectual pianist. He is able to reveal to the listener the true beauty of the work and the true intent of the composer, without focusing his attention only on external effects. Therefore, his manner of execution is often compared with the Richter one.

In Tomsk, Volodin demonstrated virtuosity, a brilliant command of technical techniques, without which a worthy interpretation of Prokofiev’s powerful and innovative work is simply unthinkable. At concerts on April 6, one of which was charity, the premiere of the new Steinway took place. A hand-made grand piano replaced Yamaha, who had honestly worked on the Tomsk stage for several decades. A great instrument, acquired at the initiative of Denis Matsuev, will be a powerful argument for the best pianists in the world to include Tomsk in their tour schedule.

Excerpts from Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet”, called reformist music historians, were also heard at the concert. There are many dramatic pages in the history of this work. Hard criticism of the libretto, voiced in the article of the newspaper "Pravda" "Ballet falsehood" and forced to go to its cardinal changes. The arrest and execution of playwright Adrian Ivanovich Piotrovsky, who took part in creating the rejected ballet script. Friction with choreographer Leonid Lavrovsky, who insisted on making significant changes to the score. However, the ballet, the music of which the Bolshoi Directorate once rejected because of its "non-dance", as a result of which the triumphal premiere took place not in the Soviet Union, but in the Czech Republic, has survived and is successfully performed in many theaters in the world.
