For the first time on stage of the Maly Theater, "Queen of Spades"

On the stage of the main building of the Maly Theater of Moscow on Saturday, October 20, a young engineer German, played by Alexander Drivnya, a recent graduate of the Shchepkin school, sought from the old countess, theater star Satira Vera Vasilyeva, to unravel the secrets of three winning cards. The Maly Theater successfully hosted the premiere of the play “Queen of Spades” directed by People’s Artist Andrei Zhitinkin.

For two centuries, the Maly Theater "Queen of Spades" first goes on its stage, and Andrei Zhitinkin works with theater actors for the second time, the first was the production of "Love Circle" in 2008. Although Zhitinkin is a fan of shocking the public, in this production he decided not to resort to experimentation. The play The Queen of Spades is as close as possible to the original Pushkin text, on the stage are large-scale, corresponding to the era of scenery, the music of List and Tchaikovsky sounds. The costumes in which the actors shine on the stage were created by Slava Zaitsev. The fashion maestro chose the fabrics for them in Paris himself.

Andrei Zhitinkin believes that the performance has not lost its relevance, because modern young people are even more characteristic of the desire to get everything at once. This sometimes becomes possible, but how dangerous such a situation can become and reminds a performance. The director added several remarks to the text of the play, in which the countess recalls her past.

Vera Vasilieva found new colors for the portrait of her heroine. The countess in her performance is a lonely elderly woman who has a fairly emotional rich past behind her. Her character is capricious, but humanity is hidden behind the whims and external coldness. Therefore, in the end of the play, the countess, who forgave Herman, comes to him in the form of a ghost in the hospital and reassures the lullaby lullaby.
