MOSCOW. The repertoire of the capital’s theaters was replenished with another performance staged by the play of William Shakespeare. In the theater to them. On November 22, Pushkin premiered the play "Measure for Measure", staged by the famous director Declan Donnellan. The play was the first international project for the theater, implemented jointly with the British theater “Cheek by Jow”.

The play for the production was chosen by the director himself, who considered that her plot is timeless, universal. Although the majority of directors who turned to the play “Measure for Measure” approached the material as an exemplary plot for a political theater, therefore they staged the play, focusing it on pressing issues.

Indeed, this Shakespearean play represents reflections on double morality, on power changing people, revealing not the best sides of their character. However, according to Yevgeny Pisarev, artistic director of the Pushkin Theater, Donnellan staged the play, preferring other priorities. The British director is more interested not in momentary problems, but in what happens to a person who has received new opportunities, how his beliefs change.

The action takes place in Vienna, where during the reign of the liberal Duke, morals finally fell. The duke transfers power to a judge who is about to rectify the situation with the help of the toughest measures. However, the result of his work is even greater lawlessness.

The plot ends with the return of the Duke and the removal from power of the presumptuous judge. It’s hard to call it a victory. The play leaves open many questions, which is common for Shakespeare’s plays. The production is occupied not only by the actors of the theater. Pushkin, but also invited personally by the director of their colleague.
