The first premiere of the season in the Nizhny Novgorod drama - "Paul I" based on the play by D. Merezhkovsky

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Drama Theater On October 10, Gorky presented the audience with his first premiere in the new season - the production of the play “Paul I”. This play, written by playwright Dmitry Merezhkovsky, was conceived by the author as part of a historical trilogy.

After its publication in 1908, the play was banned for censorship reasons, and the circulation was confiscated. In 1912, the author was tried for contempt of authority, but was acquitted. Events on the stage send spectators to the very beginning of the 19th century, when a plot was being prepared against the emperor.

However, the play staged by director Elena Nevezhina did not become a consistent presentation of historical facts. In her difficult work, she filled the universal sense, allowing not only to artistically generalize the global themes raised in the play, but also to affect the emotions of each viewer.

For the two months during which the performance was being prepared, a team of metropolitan directors, including directors E. Nevezhin and R. Tornau, production designer D. Rozumov and lighting designer I. Vinogradov, did a serious job. The performance was of the highest level.

A huge merit in this and the cast, each of which did not just play, but lived on the stage the tragedy of the lives of their heroes. Evgeni Zerin, who plays the main character of the play, very convincingly fulfills his role. The tragedy of an unfortunate person who has power, but has never seen the love of others, causes sympathy among the audience, although the character himself is not too pleasant.

Ahead of “Paul I” is a long life, which will certainly be marked by prestigious awards. This performance will be shown on October 22, the closing day of the theater festival. Gorky. It will be held for the seventh time on the stage of the drama theater from October 16.
