Exhibition of portraits of artists of the 18-20 centuries in the Novgorod Museum of Fine Arts

VELIKIY NOVGOROD. The Museum of Fine Arts, which is part of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, opened a large-scale exhibition for visitors on June 14th. The exhibition exposition offers to get acquainted with a collection of works of art from the museum fund of the portrait genre.

More than two hundred paintings and drawings were selected from the rich museum collection for display at the exhibition. The creators of the exhibition did not disregard the sculptural portraits. The works of art included in the exposition of the exhibition were created over three centuries, recent works date from the beginning of the twentieth century.

Opening the exhibition, museum staff said that the exposition presented to the guests of the exhibition included works by not only famous professional masters. Considerable space is reserved for the works of provincial artists, and some works are presented as works by unknown authors.

It is not so important that the works of art are made by amateurs, the main thing is that with their help you can see an objective reflection of the historical era. The images appearing on the portraits depict people of various classes - from provincial nobles to aristocrats and military ranks.

The most widely represented at the exhibition are portraits of reigning persons - among which a large number of works depicting Catherine the Second. Among them are graphic works, one of which is a copy of the original work of the artist from Sweden, V. Erickson, who portrayed Catherine the Second in a kokoshnik.

The preparation for the exhibition opened was lengthy, as many portraits needed restoration, authorship was clarified, the dates of their writing. Now they can be seen in the exhibition hall until September 10th.
