In Veliky Novgorod, get acquainted with the work of artist M. Čiurlionis

VELIKIY NOVGOROD. On January 31, an open grand exhibition project took place at the Dialogue Center for Contemporary Art, the exposition of which was housed in three exhibition halls. The event that became the focus of the project was the visit of Stasis Urbanis, director of the Čiurlionis Museum in Vilnius. He presented 30 reproductions of paintings written by a classic of Lithuanian musical culture and an amazing artist Mikolyus Čiurlionis.

The originals of the master’s works almost never leave the museum, since the technique of their execution (the artist painted with pastel or tempera on paper) made the work of Čiurlionis for more than a hundred years, very fragile. In the work of Čiurlionis there are still many mysteries. Art historians attribute his paintings either to symbolism or to abstract art.

The works created by him in a short time (1907-1909) are called the “юрiurlionis world”, in which he saw how the sound, in a mysterious way, comes into contact with color. During his life, Mikolous Chyurlionis did not receive recognition. His musical works were not performed, and artistic creativity was perceived with difficulty. The artist died very young, he was only 36 years old.

Almost immediately after his death, the attitude towards his work changed dramatically. Now in Lithuania there are several memorial museums bearing the name of the master, an annual music competition is held to them. Čiurlionis, In Vilnius is the National School of the Arts named after M.K. Čiurlionis, where children join the world of music, painting and ballet.

The exhibition project, until March 2, combined the works of the Lithuanian classic with the exposition "Great Russia", which contains reproductions of paintings by Nicholas Roerich. And next to them are the works of our contemporaries - Alexei Andreev, Svetlana and Igor Anisiforov.
