Everything changed in 1946, when Semenov-Amursky was accused by senior colleagues of “formalism”, which caused the closure of exhibition areas for his works. For more than two decades, the artist’s work could be seen only at unofficial shows - the so-called “apartment exhibitions”.

The study of Byzantine and Egyptian art, as well as a thorough study of children’s drawings led the artist to abandon three-dimensional images. This peculiar style became the main difference of his work. The works of Semenov-Amursky attract with their decorativeness, sophistication of color.
